Western Teleport featured as one of "The Most Underrated Albums of 2011"
--
"Evoking a strange world, it sounds like it’s played on 20th-century instruments excavated during the 22nd century and jury-rigged for tentative amplification. The sustain pedal on the piano is perpetually stuck, the guitars flare and flicker like fireworks, and a low-level headache hum thrums underneath every note. It's a wonderfully bizarre idea of what rock music can be, and is matched only by the whimsy and imagination of Matheny's lyrics, which cycle through various perspectives...It's a lively and eccentric record, yet triumphant in its deep empathy and humanity."

"Emperor X is so special because of his particular voice. It is lo-fi pop but it is not from the bedroom, the basement -- it feels like it is from the Greyhound, the MacBook, the wi-fi'ed park bench. On "Erica Western Teleport" he namedrops Firewire and Battlestar Galactica, he suggests you go get some exercise. Yet it is not hokey or "funny", the work of a punchline-slinging folkster. It is simply precise. Muddy, catchy, personal, persistent -- and precise. In this way, Chad Matheny reminds me of certain rappers: The Streets, Lil Wayne, Lil B, Big Boi. These are MCs who rap whatever images feel rightest, and fuck the universal. Sometimes our longings are broad, sometimes they are very precise."

BIOGRAPHY

Former science educator Chad Matheny has been recording and performing music under the Emperor X moniker since 1998. His albums grabbed the attention of NPR, Salon.com, Pitchfork, Vice/Noisey, The Onion, The New Yorker, Said the Gramophone, Rote Raupe, Motor.de, and many other international media outlets. The UK's Plan B magazine called his music "a swollen interfusion of capricious brilliance." Western Teleport, his latest album, was released in 2011 on the venerable Bar/None Records to international blog and college radio acclaim, including a rave review on PopMatters, attention from influential Seattle alternative radio giant KEXP, and plaudits from The Huffington Post, in which a writer called Matheny's music "one of the most creative things I've ever heard of."

Matheny performs regularly around the world, bringing his music to art galleries, bars, bookstores, university symposia, college radio stations, and one very confused laser tag arena in Connecticut. Plan-It-X Records will release a collection of live recordings from these events in the spring of 2013. Sometimes Matheny employs the aid of a ramshackle, revolving lineup of friends on drone guitars and marimbas; sometimes he uses little more than a shoulder-mounted battery amp and a delay pedal. He's shared stages with indie luminaries like Sebadoh, Nada Surf, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, The Hold Steady, Jeffrey Lewis, and John Vanderslice, who dubbed Matheny "a serious genius" on his photo blog after they toured together.

Matheny's reputation as an audio producer is also growing. In 2011 and 2012, a collaborative sound installation work with art photographer Joel Sternfeld appeared throughout Europe in a traveling retrospective exhibition sponsored by Museum Folkswang. He co-helmed the 2008 album Bits by Sub Pop jangle punk mainstays Oxford Collapse alongside Eric Topalski of Don Caballero. He has also been commissioned to compose video soundtrack music for labor unions (SEIU), non-profit organizations (SF4HEALTH.ORG and Planned Parenthood), and global megacorporations (Shell Oil).
